SEO for construction companies means being found when owners, developers and facility managers search by building type, delivery method, scope and region, in Google and in AI answers. Most contractor websites have one services page and a photo gallery, so those searches land on someone else. The fix is a page per sector, per market and per significant project, with the specifics in text.
Why construction search is different, how competitive it is, the pages to build, and how owners use AI to shortlist.
SEO for construction companies is different because the client is choosing a contractor for a building, not buying a product. Owners, developers and facility managers search by building type, delivery method, scope and region, then read project pages to judge fit. A contractor site with one services page and a photo gallery gives none of those searches anywhere to land.
Most general contractor websites are built to impress someone who already has the firm's name: a hero video, a mission statement, a gallery. That reader matters, but they are not the one searching. The one searching typed "design-build contractor for a medical office in Columbus" and is reading the three firms that wrote a page about exactly that. Specialty trades, which compete on urgency rather than building type, are covered on the contractors page.
Less than most firms assume. In our October 2026 Semrush pull, "seo for construction companies" had 2,400 monthly searches at a keyword difficulty of 23, and "general contractor seo" had 880 at 19. Difficulty in that range means the pages ranking are not unbeatable. The client-side terms, building type plus city, are often less contested again, because few contractors in a given market have built those pages.
The reason is structural. A regional contractor might build in six sectors across four metro areas. That is twenty-four building-type-plus-city searches, and in many markets few firms have a page for more than a handful of them. The firm that builds the rest competes mostly with directories and the occasional national builder.
A page per sector or building type, a page per delivery method you offer, a page per service such as tenant improvement or ground-up, a page per market you build in, and a page per significant project with the building type, city, size, schedule and scope stated in text. Credentials, including bonding capacity, safety record, licenses and certifications, belong on those pages as text, not in a prequalification PDF.
They ask the way they would ask a peer: who builds this kind of building in this area. ChatGPT and Google's AI answer with a short list of named firms and cite their sources. For construction those sources commonly include review profiles, local business journal lists, regional rankings and association directories, alongside contractor websites. A firm absent from those, or with project information only in photos, is hard for an engine to name.
The check takes ten minutes: ask ChatGPT and Google's AI who the leading commercial contractors are for your building type in your market, and note who is named and what is cited. Our AI visibility audit runs that check across four engines against the firms you lose bids to. The ChatGPT page lists the seven usual reasons a firm is left out.
An owner asking AI for a contractor gets three names. The rest of the market does not get the call.
Why AI search matters to a GCWe measure where the firm stands in Google and in AI answers against the three or four contractors it loses bids to, write the specification for the sector, market and project pages, and write the first pages. Your existing web developer or agency publishes them. The first analysis is free and arrives in writing within three working days. Engagements start at $20,000, with no retainer.
The fit is strongest for owner-run general contractors, design-builders and construction managers with a defined set of sectors and markets, real project history, and a website that shows little of it in text. One won project usually covers the engagement several times over.
