Multi location SEO and franchise SEO fail for the same structural reason: a business with several sites builds one page describing all of them, and search engines cannot associate any single location with any single place.
Every location needs a page. Every page needs a reason to exist.
Multi-location SEO is the practice of making each site of a multi-site business findable in its own city, rather than making the company findable once. It requires a distinct page per location carrying genuine local content, a distinct business profile per location, and consistent citations for each.
The common failure is a single page listing every address. It reads sensibly to a human. To a search engine it is one page about several places, which means it is strongly about none of them, and local intent in any one city fails to resolve to it.
From our own measurement: a two-location company analysed in July 2026 held dedicated pages for both cities. Both ranked for zero keywords. Meanwhile the home page held position 10 for a service-plus-city term belonging to the second location. The location pages existed; they simply carried no content that made them about anywhere.
Content that could not be copied to another city. If swapping the city name produces a page that reads correctly for a different location, the page carries no local signal and will not rank.
Franchise SEO adds one further complication. Individual franchise locations frequently compete with the national brand domain for the same local terms, and the national domain usually wins on authority while converting worse. Resolving that requires a deliberate decision about which entity should own local intent, and consistent internal linking to support it.
The direction of travel is documented outside our own work. Semrush tracked Google AI Overview appearance rising from roughly 6.5 percent of queries in January 2025 to a peak near 25 percent that July across a ten-million-keyword sample. BrightEdge, measuring nine commercial industries, recorded 48 percent of queries triggering an AI Overview by February 2026. Seer Interactive measured organic click-through on those queries falling from 1.76 percent to 0.61 percent. Prevalence estimates vary by methodology and should be read as a range rather than a figure.
Six faults, and the first two account for most of the lost traffic.
Three pieces, in order: an analysis establishing where you stand, a build specification stating exactly what to construct, and optionally the pages themselves. Most companies start with the first and decide from there.
Your position in search and AI answers, who is beating you, what share of your market you capture, and the reasons behind all three.
Every page mapped. Target term, URL, headings, schema, internal links, priority order. Written so your developer can work straight from it.
Optional, quoted separately. Most specifications die on delivery because nobody writes the pages. We write them if you want us to.
Send your company and your locations. We will measure each one separately against the competitors appearing in that specific city, and show you which sites are carrying the others.
No call required and no obligation. Read it, check it yourself, and decide. If the findings are worth discussing after that, we can talk then.
