Five causes explain almost every case of a business that cannot be found. They are not equally likely, they do not cost the same to fix, and the corrective work differs completely depending on which applies.
This page will not fix it, but it should tell you which one you have.
In order of how often we find them: the site has no page for what people search, pages compete with each other, the business is not resolved to a place, the site is not indexed at all, or it ranks fine and the traffic is simply all branded.
Four checks, all free, in this order. Each takes a few minutes and together they narrow it to one cause in most cases.
| Check | How | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Are you indexed? | Search site:yourdomain.com in Google | If few or no pages appear, the problem is indexing, not ranking |
| Is your traffic branded? | Search Console, filter queries containing your company name | If nearly all traffic is branded, search is acquiring nobody |
| Do you have a page for it? | Search site:yourdomain.com [the service] | If nothing relevant returns, no page exists to rank |
| Do several pages compete? | Same search, count how many of your URLs appear | Three or more for one term means they are splitting your ranking strength |
From our own measurement: in one analysis in July 2026, a single search returned seven of the company’s own pages at positions 9, 36, 51, 59, 63, 66 and 69. None ranked well because search engines could not determine which page answered the question. The company had assumed it was a link or authority problem. It was neither.
Then search is functioning as a directory lookup rather than an acquisition channel, and it is introducing you to nobody. This is the single most common finding in established businesses, and it is usually invisible from inside because the traffic figure looks fine.
A company receiving 190 monthly visits might reasonably assume search is working. If every one of those visitors typed the company name, the website is confirming an address for people who already had it. That is a service a phone book entry would provide.
The test is quick. In Search Console, filter your queries to exclude your company name. What remains is your actual acquisition from search. For a substantial number of established businesses, what remains is close to zero.
From our own measurement: in one industrial category analysed in July 2026, the term “pick and pack fulfillment services” carried a keyword difficulty score of 14 and a cost per click of $32.57. The 219-keyword cluster around it averaged a difficulty of 6. Difficulty that low on terms priced that high does not normally coexist: advertisers established the commercial value while the organic positions went unclaimed.
The direction of travel is documented outside our own work. Semrush tracked Google AI Overview appearance rising from roughly 6.5 percent of queries in January 2025 to a peak near 25 percent that July across a ten-million-keyword sample. BrightEdge, measuring nine commercial industries, recorded 48 percent of queries triggering an AI Overview by February 2026. Seer Interactive measured organic click-through on those queries falling from 1.76 percent to 0.61 percent. Prevalence estimates vary by methodology and should be read as a range rather than a figure.
Look at non-branded traffic over twelve months, and at whether the number of pages targeting distinct commercial terms has increased. Rankings reports and traffic totals can both improve while acquisition stays at zero.
None of this means an agency is doing poor work. Competitive search diagnostics is a different discipline from design and content production, and most creative firms do not do it. That is a specialisation difference rather than a criticism, and it is why an outside diagnosis is usually the missing piece rather than a replacement.
site:yourdomain.com in Google first. If few or no pages appear, the issue is indexing rather than ranking, and it is usually a technical fault that can be corrected quickly. If pages do appear, the issue is that nothing on the site targets terms buyers actually search, which is a content and structure problem.Send your company and your market. We will run the analysis against your real competitors and send back what we find, including which of these five is actually the problem.
No call required and no obligation. Read it, check it yourself, and decide. If the findings are worth discussing after that, we can talk then.
